Sales numbers for BD anime releases in 2008 have finally become available, and are presented here. The figures reveal a strikingly good performance for anime featuring large robots.

Unlike DVD sales, BD sales numbers remain difficult to ascertain in Japan, so the sales ranking is informative as to what releases are dominating sales on the next video format of the future…

What is most obvious here is just how much Macross F and Code Geass R2 (especially Macross) dominated BD sales during the latter months of 2008…

The time period for the information collected is actually less than half of the year, but because BD is still in the process of supplanting the DVD (meaning many people are still switching over to BD players from DVD) and that 2 huge titles (Macross and Geass) both went on sale in August, the top 8 BD releases for this time period are also the best selling 8 BD releases for all of 2008.

Some new BD versions of older titles also made it onto the chart, such as the Ghost in the Shell movie, Innocence, Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and the old classic Lupin movie, The Castle of Cagliostro (which is definitely a must-see for those who haven’t had the pleasure).

Gundam 00 did not do nearly as well as Macross or Geass (despite the current Gundam series trouncing Geass R2 in TV ratings), a large part of which can be attributed to the BD version of the show going on sale several months after the DVD release (which debuted in January), most likely resulting in DVD sales consuming a fair share of what otherwise would have been BD purchases.

Schoolboy Sex Lessons Get Lady Teacher Sacked

A lady teacher (24) has been fired after it became apparent she was giving extracurricular education of a very intimate kind to one of her students, a second year middle schooler (14).

The prefectural board of education reports that the lady teacher apparently took the boy to her apartment and similar during June and July, where the pair became most intimate.

The teacher has this to say: “I was giving him advice about his school life, and then we exchanged mail addresses and became good friends. I did an inexcusable thing to both the pupil and his parents.”

We do not hear how their relationship came to the attention of authorities; the speculation is that the boy might of bragged about his liaisons.

Nor do we hear why she was not arrested; presumably police and others were too busy imagining themselves in the boy’s shoes…

Little, Brown Gets Haruhi Light Novels in English

The Publishers Weekly trade periodical reports that Little, Brown Books for Young Readers will publish Nagaru Tanigawa's Haruhi Suzumiya light novels in English starting in April of 2009. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is the first of the nine volumes, and the main inspiration for anime series of the same name. Little, Brown Books acquired the series from Kadokawa Shoten in a joint venture with Yen Press, who also revealed today that it will be publishing the manga version of the novels in North America. (Both companies are imprints of Hachette Book Group USA.) The first novel volume will be released in a US$8.99 trade paperback version and a US$16.99 hardcover version. 4.5 million novel copies and 1.5 million manga copies have been sold in Japan.

The story revolves around a weird but beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya who convinces (or drags) several of her high school mates into joining a club that explores extraordinary phenomena and other hi-jinks.
